What is chiropractic?
A healthcare profession focused on musculoskeletal disorders and their effect on the nervous system and general health.
The short version
Chiropractors diagnose and treat mechanical disorders of the human locomotor system — particularly neuromusculoskeletal disorders — and provide advice on preventing them. Chiropractic is an effective treatment for back pain, neck pain and headaches, and for many people provides better relief than medication alone.
What a chiropractor actually does
The core technical skills are adjustments — a type of specific joint mobilisation — and soft tissue techniques that release the spine and surrounding muscles. An adjustment aims to restore normal range of movement to a joint that is dysfunctional or restricted. That eases pain and tightness, and allows the tissue around it to heal and recover its elasticity.
At Orewa Chiropractic that hands-on work is only half of it. Our integrated approach combines manual therapy with structured exercise programming, because passive treatment on its own rarely produces lasting change.
Who it's for
Patients of all ages and activity levels — athletes and seniors alike — commonly present with back and neck pain, strains and sprains in the arms and legs, work and sport-related injuries, and headaches. We primarily treat adults.
Is it safe?
Chiropractic is one of the most researched manual therapies for musculoskeletal complaints. Like every clinical intervention there are contraindications for specific conditions, and we screen for those thoroughly at your first appointment. If chiropractic isn't appropriate for you, we will say so and point you toward the right practitioner.
Chiropractic in New Zealand
Chiropractors in New Zealand are registered health practitioners regulated under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act. You do not need a GP referral to see one, and chiropractors are ACC treatment providers — so injury-related care may be partially funded.
Self-management matters
We put a lot of emphasis on teaching patients strategies to manage their own condition. The goal is that you finish care understanding your body, knowing what to do when a flare hits, and not needing to depend on us to stay functional.
The goal isn't just less pain.
It's more life.
